Best Second-Story Restaurant
“Ascend the stairs and you’ll be greeted by calm: rooms painted warm gold, an upholstered banquette, and tables covered in orange linen. Poetry volumes fill a shelf in the lounge, and Italian movies are projected silently on a wall. The frequently changing menu offers antipasti, insalate e zuppe, pasta, and secondi, with many of the beautifully prepared specialties coming from the Calabrian home of Poesia’s owner. The pasta is made in-house, and might include exquisitely light and tender gnocchi, or delicate ravioli stuffed with pureed chestnuts. Try the artichoke cake, the roast chicken, and the pork tenderloin with mushrooms. Poesia feels like it’s been transplanted directly from Italy.” May 2009

Homey Poesia Balances Rustic and Refined Italian
“Patrons are greeted like old friends at this homey Castro restaurant, which offers a rustic yet refined Italian menu. Starters and pastas are good bets, especially the beet salad, ricotta gnocchi and garbanzo bean soup.

After such a filling meal, it’s tempting to shuffle over to the corner couch and curl up with a good sonnet. Even if you don’t, Poesia is a place to come back to – if not for the poetry, then at least for a satisfying Italian mean is a place that feels like home.”

Sheer Poetry: Simple but good Italian food is tucked away in a second-story room.
“We were surprised and delighted by our first courses. The gnocchi silani ($14), made with ricotta, were among the tenderest and lightest gnocchi we’ve ever encountered, and were dressed with an exquisite and equally light touch of lemony sauce with sauteed cherry tomatoes.

We all felt as though we’d stumbled into an unusually good neighborhood restaurant in Italy. San Francisco boasts a number of excellent Italian restaurants, and Poesia is serving dishes, whether homey (the soup), sophisticated (the gnocchi and artichoke cake), or simple yet thoughtful in construction (the uncliched salad) that would hold their own among them.”

Business Briefs – Poetry in Motion
“Francesco d’Ippolito, owner of the newly opened Italian restaurant Poesia, wants you to enjoy your meal “with all of your senses stimulated.” This is why he chose the name Poesia, which means “poetry” in Italian. D’Ippolito hopes that your dining experience will be as evocative and sensuous as beautiful poetry. D’Ippolito has filled Poesia’s menu with cuisine from his native Calabria, a region in southern Italy. In fact, many of the recipe’s came from the kitchen of d’Ippolito’s own grandmother. All of the pasta is handmade on-site.”
